Navigating dreams: Jules's Journey from beauty pageants to adversity and hope
In the heart of The Gambia, Jules' name once resonated with the pride of being crowned Miss Gambia in 2019. Her life, filled with aspirations, took an unexpected turn as she embarked on a journey beyond her homeland in pursuit of a better life.
Jules’ journey began with a beauty pageant in Kosovo*, where she had the honor of returning not just as a contestant but as a host for the event. This opportunity was a testament to her talent, but it also marked the beginning of a journey fraught with challenges.
“I represented my country and then returned home. This year, I was invited to help organize it. It was an incredible experience”, Jules reminisced.
Yet, beneath the glamour of international events lay reality. Recent political developments back home have introduced new challenges, including economic difficulties and safety concerns that influenced her decision to leave.
Jules embarked on her journey alone, traveling through the Western Balkans in hopes of reaching a place where she could rebuild her life. Her story is not just one of glamour and pageantry but of resilience amidst adversity.
“In my country, the economic situation is dire,” she explained. “Job opportunities are scarce, and safety is a constant concern. The recent wave of crime and drug abuse has made it even more dangerous.”
Her path to Bosnia and Herzegovina was marked by its own difficulties. The first attempt to cross borders ended in disappointment. Undeterred, Jules tried again, only to face a different kind of threat: “The person guiding us attempted to assault me with a knife. I didn’t feel safe and was in pain. I had to turn back.”
Despite the setbacks, Jules remains hopeful. “I am currently in the temporary reception center here, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and though it’s not ideal, I feel somewhat secure. I’m considering moving forward to Italy, where I have friends, and eventually to Germany, where I have extended family.”
Jules’ ambitions are as multifaceted as her journey. She dreams of pursuing fashion and event decoration—a continuation of her work back home—and advancing her education and journalism career. Her experiences in media, both as a radio and TV presenter, remain a significant part of her identity.

“Back home, I was in my final year at university, studying journalism. I also worked as a part-time radio presenter and did some TV work. If I return, I could resume my career, but the situation there is so unstable,” Jules shared.
Her story is a stark reminder of the risks faced by those who embark on perilous journeys in search of safety and better opportunities. Jules' experience highlights the critical importance of informed migration decisions and the challenges faced by many who are forced to leave their homes.
“If I had known the reality of the journey—how dangerous and uncertain it would be—I might have chosen a different path,” Jules reflected. “The agents who promised an easy route misled me. I wish I had known the risks and that there might be safer ways to pursue my dreams.”
For those considering similar journeys, Jules has a powerful message: “Use the money you have to explore legal avenues for migration. The risks and hardships of irregular migration are significant. It’s better to seek safe and informed paths.”
Jules’ story is one of resilience, hope, and the quest for a better future. Her journey continues, and while the road ahead is uncertain, her determination shines brightly.
